Marley Cat, Dog-like Cat, 2001-2009
Beloved Marley Cat passed away near his home on Pearl Street in Santa Cruz on Friday, May 15th, 2009. He was 52 (in cat years).
Marley Cat was born in the Fall of 2001, somewhere near the College Inn, Corvallis, Oregon. At a young age, he broke free from the chains of being feral and decided to follow Randell Laughlin from the side yard of the TKE fraternity to the home of Carly White on 16th Street. He never left.
Marley Cat spent his early years resisting baths in the kitchen sink, walking Carly to the edge of campus and attacking feet from under the covers. Later he lived with three Pomeranians: Bella, Stinky and Davey. Many have concluded that his dog-like traits came from his time at the Polk Street house.
In search of a change, Marley Cat spent a short period of time in San Diego with Alvin and Donna White. It was there he gained a considerable amount of weight eating everything under the sun. Marley Cat road-tripped back to the Oregon Coast to reside with Grandma White. He spent his time in the sun room or out stalking raccoons, seagulls and field mice with little success.
Always up for adventure, Marley Cat traveled to Arizona and Vegas before settling at Sarah Woodside’s Pearl Street home. Marley often expressed that he felt most at home with Sarah. Marley lived for the ocean breeze, the shrills from the Boardwalk and greeting Sarah when she’d come home each evening.
Marley Cat will be remembered for his loquaciousness, unusually large build, bold attitude, counter-top scavenging and Labrador-like loyalty.
Marley Cat is survived by Sarah Woodside, Santa Cruz, CA; Carly White, San Francisco, CA; Randell Laughlin, Washington, D.C.; Alvin and Donna White, Salt Lake City, Utah; and Grandma White, Waldport, OR. He is further survived by the loving Woodside family, many Banana Slugs, Crownies, the Pomeranians and the neighborhood clowder.
His family requests that in lieu of donations, hugs and flowers are directed to Sarah Woodside.
