Scar Tissue
I am having difficulty keeping track of what day it is. This is not indication that I am doing poorly, or that I am doing well. It’s been foggy, with patches of sunshine – if you get my drift.
My recovery has been interesting. Some days I have hobbled, and then some days I have crawled. I have become one with the four large incisions on my two swollen feet. There is scar tissue that I touch 3-4 times a day, as I spread Mederma into the wounds (and will do so for 7 more weeks). I am of the belief that scar tissue is actually superior to it’s former state – you should see how my feet have transformed.
Everyone keeps asking, “What do you do each day?” It most certainly is not the usual routine of work/gym/errands/dinner/veg/sleep/repeat. And, oddly enough, it’s a difficult question to answer. Everything takes a really long time. So, to do a whole lot of nothng actually takes a whole lot of effort. To take a bath (feet out of the tub!) it takes about an hour. In the time it takes me to make it from my bedroom to the living room, you could probably teach a child to read.
I’ve been reading a lot and keeping up with the news (in between my dilaudid induced naps). I burned through Scar Tissue (ironic title, and strange that I now love Anthony Keidis even more) in a matter of 2 days. I’m aware of all of the latest Hollywood gossip (cut me slack – I’m on drugs). I watched each speech from the D & R conventions, and then read the articles.
I’m taking a lot of pills. Over 10 each day actually. This requires that I make little snacks throughout the day (see above about things taking a really long time). I also have to drink a lot of water (which later requires that I connect with porcelain). I am taking a bunch of homeopathic stuff to reduce the swelling and increase the bone density and yadda yadda yadda.
The visitors have come in droves. Bearing gifts and stories and hugs. Presently, my mama is with me. We’ve sat in the yard and we’ve made tasty things and we’ve called papa every day. Together, we have conquered the chicken pocks of ’84, the jaw surgery & skin cancer of ’03 and the scar re-surfacing of ’05. Later today she’ll be by my side as I experience acupuncture for the first time. Let the chi flow!
