In graduate school I met Emily Boling. We shared many things: the same supervisor, the same color of hair, laughs, the same humor and the same mindset when it came to many things. We had a lot of fun orchestrating covert ops and swapping residential life tales…
One thing we often heard when meeting with our “smart kids” (aka trouble makers) is the same opening line. We would begin our discussion about “the incident” by asking them to share their side first. Commonly, their tale would begin with “Well, what happened was…”. There was always a tale. Always. We joked that we should write a book about Res LIfe titled “Well, what happened was…”
Ironically, I often find myself using that same line to begin one of my own stories. I also find myself saying “It’s my own damn fault” a lot - but that’s a whole other story.
This 4th of July, Emily made the above pictured cake. I had to share it with you all because it’s great and I wanted to pay hommage to Emily, who is really great too. Also, so often we rag on this country despite it’s greatness. America (and Emily) kicks ass.
