I was privileged (again) to read the names and majors at Crown College/UCSC’s graduation. Reading the names is actually quite difficult because a) everyone is excited and not paying attention, b) it’s rapid fire, c) no one realizes that you actually don’t know how to properly pronounce their name (imagine the Xing’s, Nyguen’s, or the like) despite you tugging on their gown begging they whisper their name into your ear…
I took the award for best flib when I announced “Sarah Edmonds, Applied Psychology” This was a real problem because a) I don’t think the major of Applied Psychology even exists, b) It’s a bit of a demotion to call an Applied Physics major a Psych major. It’s like calling a canoe a ship or a Cruise Guided Missile Carrier a boat. So, I decided the best course of action would be to say the following “I mean, Applied Physics. Sarah Edmonds studied Applied Physics”. Before she received her diploma, she received the most stage time, the largest round of applause, and a bashful cringe of apology from me.
