I book up fast, and am ibook-less
A professor at OSU once shared the John Lennon quote “Life is what happens to you when you are busy making other plans” in response to my tardiness on an assignment. John Lennon was right, however for the last few weeks I’ve been experiencing all of those plans (and the un-planned) and it’s been a true “life experience”.
The last post you read, I was heading to Seattle to see Cari andDave and the Dala Lama. Dave was a hoot, the Lama was aglow in his red ensemble, and we were surprised with our buddies Death Cab who came out and played 6 songs before Dave and Tim. Cari was the perfect tour guide and took me for fish and chips, coffee at the original Starbucks, crumpets and plenty of drinks. Currently I don’t think I am a size 8, but that is okay. Funny side note: the original Starbucks uses the brown/original logo cups year round. I, of course, was dejected to discover their nationwide promotion of the Pike Place Blend and use of said cups. As I proudly sipped coffee from my coveted brown logo mug on Monday, other colleagues came into the office with the same mug… from downstairs. Bah!)
I returned from Seattle to discover the SoCal weather in the Bay Area. Mary and I hopped on the red scooter (in black heels - hottttttt!) to go to dinner and a play. It was 72 at 6pm. 72 in the city. !!!!!. We had tapas at Cortez and then saw the play, The Government Inspector. Basically, a town goes into a paranoid frenzy when they hear the rumor that “the government inspector” is coming to town. A perfect play on the play of paranoia.
A few days later, Mary left for Kauai and Faithy came to town for a week. Faithy and I are used to spending months at a time with each other, but we made the most of seven days. She is the person who gets me (the good and the bad) and is always rooting for me. We first met at Stanford five years ago, and have visited each other every few months since. We went big on a Tuesday night (Amelie and the Redwood Room). We went to Imani’s birthday party in Santa Cruz and ordered rounds of buttery nipples at Dakota with old UCSC pals. We went to Sushi Ran, two days in a row. We visited our pal Bobbi Brown and ate pudding pies. I think I’m even further from a size 8, but feeling much closer to being me.
On my maternal Grandfather’s 89th birthday, his 99 year old sister Anne fully stopped living. She had been in a home in San Juan Capistrano for the last 5 years. Prior to that, she lived the life in Florida with her church pals and job at the telephone company. She never married and she never had kids, and she called my Grandpa “Mikey”. He visited her every couple of days and delivered her chocolates and brotherly love.
My uncle is being treated for a lump o’ sumptin’ behind his eye.
I was in LA last week and saw my Mom and Grandparents. I also saw the coffee guy, the hotel guy and the Hertz guy (I travel to LA a lot). All of these people love me, more than I know. My family, in particular, reminded me of the ways I’ve contributed to the family. This has floored me for the last few days on a happiness high. The coffee guy, whose name I cannot pronounce to save my life, invited me to start a family with him… In the immortal words of Mary’s friend Chris “I’m not saying you have to marry an investment banker Carly, but c’mon!” I passed on the offer and selected a bran muffin instead.
Scott had to let go of Jackson the dog. He had sumptin’ not good going on.
My mothering gene made a strong appearance. Walter fed Max the dog a half pound of treats. Max weights 25 pounds. Max was a very sick dog Sunday morning. He experienced what you might describe as “explosive shits”. At no point, due to my mothering gene, during the “explosive shits”, was I grossed out. I took little buddy to Golden Gate Park to celebrate Earth Day and see our buddy Brett Dennen. Max had a good time, enjoyed the fresh air, and I enjoyed letting him run off into the bushes to take care of business… I scored frosty beverages from some guys cooler, green toys and good times with Zmack, Jim and Chris.
I sold my ibook to a musician in Fairfax. She was excited and hugged me and asked if it had Netscape… She got a good deal, but I think I got an even better one. I’m on the fence and can’t decide: a new ibook or the new mac air. Believe it or not, this is one of the biggest questions weighing on my mind right now. I’m one lucky girl.
